Giardini
Pensili ( 'Hanging Gardens') started its activity as interdisciplinary
theatre company in 1985 in Italy. Directed by Roberto Paci
Dalò, Giardini Pensili's work has a position all of its own
in the international arts landscape and pop culture territories.
Its work is not easily situated in a particular genre or well-defined
movement. It has developed an authentic theatrical language out of its
background in sound and visual arts, which combines the spoken language
with body, architectural elements, and an articulated work on acoustical
and visual perception. The continuous interrelationship amongst art, science, and nature leads the process.
Giardini Pensili is today a non-profit organization running a performing
arts company, a think tank lab, a production house for media in the broadest
sense. It is also a centre for collaborations and network activites.

The use of new technologies in combination with traditional drama, makes
its productions particularly innovative establishing inusual ilnks between
new network concepts, interactivity and narration. Its perfomances are
regularly presented in Europe, Middle East, North and Latin America, Russia.

Giardini
Pensili: anatomy of electronic cultures. Roberto Paci Dalò developed with his Giardini Pensili Company a
number of projects exploring language and (tele)communications systems
through the production of theatre and music-theatre pieces, music,shows and installations, cinema
& video, symposia, radioworks, publications, festivals, software
& hardware.
TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR SOUND/VIDEO INSTALLATION WORKS...
In our installations we mainly deal with sound and video materials. Often
using interactive systems and also custom made interfaces. We present
it in regular venues such as museums and art galleries but we really like
to deal wih the public space as well.
WHAT KIND OF COLLABORATIONS GIARDINI PENSILI ESTABLISHED?
Giardini Pensili's breaking borders activity include permanent collaborations
with some of the most exciting institutions in art, design and architecture.
i.e. the Domus Academy in Milan, the publishing house Cronopio Edizioni,
the national Italian and Austrian broadcasting houses.
Fondazione Morra
in Naples is the art foundation representing Paci Dalò's installation
work (visit the installation area). His installations
mainly deal with video and sound technologies often involving interactive
systems.
With media-g (Hamburg)
has been developed the project 'Augmented Reality Fiction': how to combine
live narration and performing arts with GPS systems in a exciting new
vision of interfaces and interaction. This project received a Ars Electronica
Honorary Mention in 1999 in the category Interactive Art.
WHAT ABOUT THE VELVET FACTORY?
Giardini Pensili is co-founder of Velvet Factory, the space for sound, image, performing arts, multimedia. An amazing project distributed throughout 2500 square metres building on the Rimini's hills. Within the Velvet Factory, the Velvet Lab is a combination of creative studio and think tank devoted to social design.
DOES GIARDINI PENSILI WORK THROUGH RESIDENCIES AS WELL?
Several of its projects are created through long
term artists-in-residencies at STEIM
Amsterdam (since 1993) and Ars
Electronica Center Linz (since 1996). In those places are deeply explored
and organized in art projects researches on: robotics, interactivity,
acoustics, sound and visual perception, man-machine relationship, telematics...
Another important place where we regularly work is The Western Front (Vancouver Canada). Other residence places include the DAAD
Berlin, GMEM Marseille,
Montévidéo Marseille.

Truly true. In
projects like Locus , Teatro
dell'Ascolto, Architettura
della separazione (Ars Electronica 1997), Greuelmärchen
(Berlin 2006) has been created a theory and praxis on interactive large
scale installations in existing sites like industrial buildings or rural
constructions. In those projects the chosen places are filled with invisible
technologie made of interactive systems and computer controlled sound
and light environments. Working on the memories, the histories of the
places, in collaboration with people like Patrizio Esposito, Tullio Brunone,
Stalker, Gerfried Stocker, Peter Kammerer, Luca Ruzza...
The artist Oreste Zevola's is the author of several
of the drawings you'll find in this site. (have a
look to Giardini Pensili's team and collaborations). In telematic projects like Realtime,
Horizontal Radio, Lost Memories a further impulse has been given into
the relationship of cyberspace and dramaturgy.
MMMMM. OLD, NEW, GREEK TRAGEDY AND INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS, CLASSICAL AND MODERN, DYONISOS, TRANCE, NEURAL NETWORKS... I'M GETTING CONFUSE!
We believe in the persistence of the classical tradition in todays' world. We think that is very possible to meet people like Dionysos, Pallas Athena and they friends in a small coffeehouse downtown. That's why the continuous work on certain authors which are more sensitive about this universe. The relationship with digital technologies and science is part of it. By the way: forgot to say that Roberto Paci Dalò is member of the Internationale Heiner Müller Gesellschaft (Berlin) and co-founder of Terra Gramsci an informal body gathering people from several fields dedicated to Antonio Gramsci's thought and to the creation of contemporaery works related to that.
AND WHAT ABOUT THE CONNECTION WITH JEWISH CULTURE?
How can you avoid Jewish culture? This site is also the home of RPDKO (established in 1988
is the oldest Italian Jewish instrumental music ensemble!) and Messianic
Soundware: Jewish Tradition and Experiment in collaboration with klezmer
star Joel Rubin. Other projects work on the meeting between tradition

identity RPD's known in the world of new electronica. Together with people
like Scanner, Rupert Huber (Tosca), Hannes Strobl (Paloma), Sam Auinger,
Philip Jeck the journey bring us to the world of new electronic cultures
and minimalism. Sampling the future, re-mixing the soundscape.

adventure. Through collaborations are created pieces which bring the work
to unexpecte lands. That's way collaboration is a fundamental aspect of

I'VE HEARD ABOUT L'ARTE DELL'ASCOLTO. IS IT THE RIGHT PLACE HERE TO
KNOW MORE ABOUT? AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH RADIO?
Between 1991 and 1998 Roberto Paci Dalò curated LADA
L'Arte dell'Ascolto - Radio & Art Festival. LADA stands as one
of the biggest efforts in the territory of new radio in its relationships
with new technologies and the Internet. The festival hosted a large number
of events including the premiere of Schwarz auf Weiss by Heiner Goebbels,
original projects like Heiner Müller Material I and II, Body & Soul, and more... with the participation of outstanding artists from alla
around the world. As final event in 1993 has been performed the EBU/UER
awarded telematic performance La lunga notte with artists in Jerusalem, Rimini, Innsbruck,
Cologne all linked through ISDN, radio and phone lines. Publiphono is
also one the LADA's most famous projects creating events for the public
adress system on the Rimini's beach 15 kilometers of coast. LADA has
been a celebration of public space projects occuring at the same time
in the urban space, on the radio broadcasting, on the net.
A a permanent on-line activity devoted to sound in 1995 has been created
Radio Lada: the Web Art Radio coproduced
with Italian and Austrian broadcasting corporations. Radio Lada is a pilot
project, a telematic forum, with the participations of artists, philosophers,
theoreticians, technicians working today in the global village (i.e. Arthur
and Marilouise Kroker and Tom Sherman).
In addition to this curatorial work, we wrote, composed and performed
a large series of innovative audio plays, radioworks,
hörspiele, produced by European broadcasting corporations. Since 2004 L'Arte dell'Ascolto is also a label
producing CDs of new electronica, soundscapes, acoustical dramaturgy,
spoken words, art + sound.
ANY CHANCE TO ATTEND TO WORKSHOPS OR PUBLIC SEMINARS CURATED BY GIARDINI
PENSILI?
The work of Giardini Pensili became "Media Dramaturgy" a course
at the Siena University between 1997 and 2001 (have a look to the course
webpages) and a series of collaborations with outstanding institutions
such as the University of Bologna, Milan Domus
Academy, the Ivrea
Interaction Design Institute, the Milan Brera
Academy of Fine Arts. Education is a central topic in GP's activity and the praxis of the 'permanent media lab' has been developed through something like 20 years now. University students and post-graduated people can also spend periods at GP's studio working as through Civil Services facilities, university stages and volounteers.

WHAT ITACA IS?
Between 1999 and 2001 Paci Dalò curated ITACA - the electronic
stage of the Teatro di Roma. It has been an innovative on-line work dealing
with the relationship between classical theatre and network technologies.
The project was physically located in the 2 centuries old Teatro Argentina
in Rome. Itaca has been a pilot project which was re-thinking about the possibilities
for theatre in its relationship with the electronic space. But also how
to combine traditional backgrounds of mostly of the artists dealing with
this territory and the digital cultures. Reflections about i.e. what the
Net is.
